MONARCH

Emile, la vocalista del grupo Underground francés de Sludge/Doom MONARCH, nos responde a estas preguntas y da la oportunidad de hacer saber algo sobre ellos a la gente que todavía no ha tenido la oportunidad de escuchar a este grupo de puro Doom Metal con una voz femenina desgarradora.

-¡Hola Emile! Muchas gracias por respondernos a estas preguntas, me alegro de tener una entrevista con un miembro de un grupo como MONARCH. Para empezar y conoceros un poco más y para que os conozcan los que todavía no han tenido la oportunidad de hacerlo, presenta y háblanos brevemente sobre MONARCH.

Primero de todo, me gustaría agradecerte que me hayas pedido responder a tus preguntas. Bueno, MONARCH es un grupo Sludge/Doom de Francia, ¡tocamos canciones realmente lentas en amperios realmente grandes!

– ¿Cómo surge la idea de formar MONARCH y por qué elegir este nombre para el grupo?

MONARCH nació hace 5 años de las tibias cenizas de un grupo Power Violence llamado TETSUO. Todos queríamos tocar canciones lentas en tonos muy bajos así que, como nuestra banda TETSUO había muerto, decidimos hacer otra. La llamamos MONARCH por esa preciosa mariposa naranja y negra.

– Y, para ti, ¿qué es MONARCH? ¿Qué significa en tu vida?

Hummm, MONARCH significa mucho para mí, es una forma de expresarme, es una especie de catarsis. También es realmente agradable tener la oportunidad de experimentar con frecuencias muy lentas, regeneración y espacio negativo. Pero lo que más me gusta son los conciertos, me encanta tocar en directo, conocer algunas nuevas personas interesantes, viajar lejos de casa para conocer nuevos lugares…

– Si algo destaca en vuestra música y también en este género, es la gran capacidad de transmitir todo tipo de sentimientos con todo el conjunto musical, tanto en la voz como melodías… ¿En qué os basáis para hacer vuestra música?

Todas nuestras canciones nacen de un riff inicial, el resto sigue de manera natural. Queremos escribir el tema musical para la desesperación y desolación.

– Pertenecéis a un sello español llamado Throne Records y sois del país vecino, sin embargo, todavía no hemos podido veros porque la única vez que intentasteis venir, finalmente, no pudo ser, ¿qué ocurrió? ¿Habéis pensado venir a España en un futuro?

A menudo hemos tocado en Bilbao y San Sebastián y estamos planeando volver este verano. Podríamos tocar en Girona, Bilbao, puede que en Madrid… Nos encanta tocar en España, la audiencia es realmente receptiva, ¡también es un gran país para ir de fiesta!

– ¿Qué ha cambiado en MONARCH desde vuestro álbum debut “Monarch” y vuestro último “Speak Of The Sea”? Tanto a nivel musical como personal.

MONARCH tiene una historia complicada. Los miembros originales eran Guillaume a la batería, Shiraz a la guitarra, Michell al bajo y yo a la voz, éstos son los que puedes escuchar en los 2 CD’s. Pero entonces, por motivos personales, Guillaume decidió dejar el grupo. Así que Felix se unió al equipo y tocó la batería en nuestro esplit con ELYSIUM, en “Speak Of The Sea” y en nuestro split con MOSS. Dos años después de unirse a nosotros, todos estábamos aburridos de tocar Doom, queríamos tocar canciones rápidas otra vez. Así que envíamos MONARCH a su tumba e hicimos otro grupo llamado RAINBOW OF DEATH. Mientras tanto Guillaume nos dijo que quería volver a tocar con nosotros… En principio no iba a ser un grupo de Sludge/Doom pero como todos tenemos una fuerte predilección por este tipo de música, fue lo que acabamos tocando de nuevo…

– Vuestro segundo trabajo es un split con el grupo ELYSIUM, ¿qué relación tenéis con esta banda? ¿Creéis que este split ha servido para que la gente sepa un poco más sobre vosotros?

Somos buenos amigos de ELYSIUM y habían planeado este split hacía ya un tiempo. No tengo ni idea de si este split nos ha ayudado en algún modo.

– Corre por ahí un trabajo autoproducido anterior a vuestro primer álbum, ¿qué nos puedes contar acerca de él? ¿Alguna vez habéis pensado en regrabar este “cinta de avance” o relanzarla con vuestro sello actual?

La canción que puedes escuchar en la cinta es el primer tema de nuestro primer disco.

– ¿Tocáis algún tema de esta grabación en vuestros directos?

¡Entonces la respuesta es sí!

– Y hablando de vuestros conciertos… ¿qué nos encontraremos si vamos a ver a MONARCH sobre el escenario?

¡Grandes amperios y cerveza!

– ¿Y debajo? ¿La gente que va a vuestros conciertos sigue algún prototipo en concreto?

No realmente, tenemos un bouquet de diferente tipo de gente en nuestros directos. Van desde black metaleros hasta punks o lo que sea. Después de 5 minutos la mayoría se suelen ir.

– Si hablamos de vuestra imagen no es muy habitual en este estilo, ¿cómo os definiríais? ¿Para vosotros la imagen es importante en el Rock y Metal?

No somos grandes fans de fotos en blanco y negro de gente muerta en nuestras portadas y libretos, preferimos imágenes monas e ingenuas con influencias de Black Metal. Imagino que todos creemos que toda la importancia que se le da a la imagen es exagerada. Así que, en cierto modo, nuestro material gráfico es una crítica deliberada de la imagen metalera.

– Vosotros os encargáis de vuestro MySpace y os mantenéis en continúo contacto con vuestros fans, ¿creéis que esto es importante para cualquier grupo musical?

Sí, es importante para nosotros responder a la gente que nos escribe, no sería bonito para nosotros que no lo hiciéramos. Algunas personas nos envían mensajes muy bonitos, un agradecimiento es siempre respondido.

– MySpace e Internet en general, bajo mi punto de vista, es una buena forma para conocer bandas Underground, ¿habéis notado en algo su influencia? ¿Creéis que Internet es beneficioso o lo contrario?

Internet es, tienes razón, una buena manera de descubrir algunos grupos nuevos, así que sí, creo que es una buena herramienta. Creo que debemos mucho a Internet, también a los foros y webzines underground. También es una excelente forma de saber lo que la gente tiene que decir sobre tu grupo y cómo lo perciben. A veces es divertido leer las razones por las que algunas personas nos odian. Muchas veces nos han acusado de ser un grupo “super falso y superficial” por la “inquisición metalero” a la que no le gustan nuestras fotos…

– ¿Qué nos puedes explicar acerca del proyecto de camisetas Candy Kill Industries? ¿Qué es y quiénes sois? ¿Con qué grupos habéis trabajado? ¿Cómo surge la idea?

Candy Kill es un
proyecto que tenemos Michell y yo. Hacemos ediciones limitadas de camisetas y copias diseñadas exclusivamente por nosotros. Podéis verlo en www.candykill.com

– Como debes saber, en QUEENS OF STEEL apoyamos a la mujer dentro de la escena del Rock y Metal y nos gusta dar a conocer grupos con mujeres en sus filas. ¿Conoces más medios basados en esta causa (webzines, fanzines, etc.)? ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre estas ideas?

Me gusta que las chicas sean capaces de saber que pueden estar en un grupo, que se pueden expresar como lo hacen los chicos. Pueden ser activas en una escena dominada por los hombres. Pueden ser algo más que simplemente la novia de ese chico. Muchas chicas se acercan a mí después de los conciertos para decirme que están orgullosas de lo que hago, que les encantaría estar en un grupo pero no pueden… es una lástima, deberían saber que sí pueden, no hay anda difícil en ello, y si no tienen una buena voz o no tocan ningún instrumento, pueden organizar conciertos, pueden dirigir grupos, hay las mismas formas de hacer cosas en esta escena para las chicas que para los chicos. Es importante hacérselo saber. Hay, en mi opinión, demasiados “las chicas no pueden hacerlo bien” en la escena metalero y no suficientes “uau, cuánto talento tiene”. La mayoría de las veces nos dicen que somos guapas o lindas, desde luego es agradable, pero prefiero cuando la gente me dice que, guapa o no, chica o chico, tengo una voz brutal. Es importante hacer saber a las chicas que no son sólo tías, son seres humanos, son una persona. Los chicos no tienen la exclusividad.

– ¿Crees que, hoy en día, la mujer es valorada como se merece? ¿Crees que ha habido un cambio desde hace dos décadas a hoy en día respecto al papel que se les suele dar?

Las mujeres merecen considerarse a sí mismas y merecen ser consideradas por los hombres como seres humanos. Algún proceso ha habido en este sentido, pero no el suficiente. La gente dice, en inglés, “MAN” y “huMAN”, esto lo dice todo. El punto no está en quién hace la cena, quien limpia la casa o quien lleva el dinero a casa. Todos estos problemas se solucionarán el día en el que consideremos a las mujeres como personas. El género no es algo claramente definido en biología, puedes ser hermafrodita o puedes tener dos XX y medio Y, puedes tener ambos sexos, no es una enfermedad y pasa más a menudo de lo que creemos… ¿Entonces por qué tenemos que poner fronteras en nuestras vidas sociales?

– Quién crees que en la música está más capacitado para transmitir dolor, tristeza… ¿hombres o mujeres? ¿Por qué?

Creo profundamente que ambos están igual de capacitados para expresar sentimientos. Hay hombres muy sensitivos y mujeres muy poco sensitivas igual que hay idiotas en ambos. Realmente es más una cuestión de persona que de género.

– ¿Puedes nombrarnos más bandas del estilo de MONARCH con miembros femeninos? ¿Y grupos con mujeres en su formación de diferentes estilos?

Para bandas lentas están THORR’S HAMMER, 13 y NOOTHGRUSH, pero todos se separaron hace unos años, OTESANEK que, desafortunadamente, también se rompieron, SEA WIZARD, SALOME, TOTEM, GREY DATURAS, ELECTRIC WIZARD y otros que ahora mismo no recuerdo.

– Y, finalmente, ¿algo que añadir para la gente interesada en lo que apoya nuestra asociación y para vuestros seguidores españoles?

– Hello Emile! Lots of thanks for asking us these questions, I’m glad to have an interview with a former of a band like MONARCH.To begin can and know you a bit more and to know and to know aout you those who have not had the opportunity to do it yet, present and talk to us brief about MONARCH.

First of all, I d like to thank you for asking me to answer your questions. Well Monarch is a sludge/Doom band from France, we play really slow songs on really big amps!

– How arises the idea of forming MONARCH and why to choose this name for the band?

Monarch was born 5 years ago from the warm ashes of a power violence band called Tetsuo. We all wanted to play slow down tuned songs so, as our band tetsuo was dead, we decided to make another one. We called it Monarch because of that pretty orange and black butterfly.

– And, for you, what is the meaning of MONARCH? What it means in your life?

Humm, Monarch means a lot to me, it s a way to express myself, it’s kind of a catharsis. It’s also really pleasant to have the opportunity to experiment with very low frequencies, feedback and negative space. But what I like the most are the shows, I love to play live, to meet some new genualy interesting people, to travel far from home to discover new places…

– If something stands out in your music and also into this genre, is the big capacity to trasmit all kind of feelings with all the musical group, already it is the voice, melodies… On what do you base to do your music?

All of our songs stem from an initial riff, the rest follows naturally. We want to write the theme song for dispare and desolation.

– You belong to a Spanish label called Throne Records and you are from the neighbot country nonetheless, we could not have seen you yet because the only time you tried it finally it could not be, why? Have you thought come to Spain in a future?

We’ ve often played in Bilbao and San Sebastian and we re planing on coming back this summer. We might play in Giron, Bilbao, maybe in Madrid… We love to play in spain, the audience is really receptive, it’s also a great country to party!

– What has changed in MONARCH from your debut album, “Monarch”, and you last “Speak Of The Sea”? So much to musical as personal level.

Monarch has a complicated story. The former members were Guillaume on drums, Shiran on guitar, Michell on bass and me on vocals, those are the ones you can hear on the 2CD. But then, for personal reasons, Guillaume decided to quit the band. So Felix joined the team and played drums on our split with Elysium, on Speak of the sea and on our split with moss. Two years after he joined us, we were all bored of playing doom, we wanted to play fast songs again. So we brang Monarch to its grave and we made another band called Rainbow of death. In the meantime Guillaume told us he wanted to play with us again… At the beginning it was not supposed to be a sludge/doom band but as we all have a strong predilection for that kind of music, that’s what we ended up playing again…

– Your second work is a split with the group ELYSIUM, what relation you have with this band

? Do you think this split it served to people know more about you?

We re good friends with Elysiüm and had planed this split since a while back. I have no idea if this split helped us in any way.

– Ir runs ther
eabouts an autoproduced work previous to your first official album, what can you explain us about it? Have you ever thought about recording again this “Advance Tape” and throw it with your current label?

The song you can hear on that tape is actually the first song of the debut 2CD.

– Do you play any song from this recording in your live shows?

Then the answer is yes!

– And talking about your concerts… what we will found if we are going to see MONARCH on the stage?

You’ll find big amps and beer!

– And down? Do the people who goes to your concerts follow some prototype concretly?

Not really, we have a bunch of different types of people at our concerts. It goes from black metalers to scenesters to punks to whatever. After five minutes, most of them usually leave.

– If we talk about image yours is not so habitual in this kind of music, how would you define yourself like? Is important for you image in Rock or Metal?

We re not huge fans of black and white pics of dead people artworks, we prefer cute and naive imagery with underline black metal references. I guess, we think all of the importance accorded to image is exagerated. So in a way our type of artwork is a deliberate criticism of metal imagery.

You take care about your MySpace and you keep in continuous contact with your fans, do you think is this important for any musical band?

Yes it’s important to us to answer people that write us, it would not be nice from us not to do so. Some people send us very nice messages, a thank you is always welcomed in return.

-MySpace and Internet in general, under my point of view, is a good way to know Underground bands, have you noticed in something it influence? Do you think Internet is benefecial or the opposite?

Internet is, you’re right, a good way to discover some new bands, so yes I think it’s a great tool. I think we owe a lot to internet, mainly to the forums and underground music websites. It’s also an excellent way to know what people have to say about your band and how they percieve it. Sometimes it’s funny to read the reasons why some people hate us. We’ ve been accused many times of being a hype arty fake band by the «metal inquisition» who didn’t like our artworks…

– What can you explain us about the t-shirts project Candy Kill Industries? What is it and who are you? With which bands haved you work? How arises the idea?

Candy Kill Industries is a project Michell and I have. We make colletable limited edition T’shirts and prints exclusively designed by us as well as a record distro for our bands and for bands and labels we appreciate. Check it out at www.candykill.com .

– As you must know in QUEENS OF STEEL we support women in the Rock and Metal Scene and we like to give knowing bans with women in their lines. Do you know more ways based on this cause (fanzines, websites, etc.)? What’s you opinion about these ideas?

I like girls being able to know that they can be in a band, that they can express themselves as well as boys do. They can be active in a male dominated scene. They can be something else that just this guy’s girlfriend. Lots of girls come to me after shows to tell me that they re proud of what I do, that they would love to be in a band but that they can’t do it… It’s a shame, they should know that they can, there is nothing difficult in it, and if they don’t have a good voice or play any instrument, they can organize concerts, they can drive bands, there are as many ways for girls as for guys to do things in the scene. It’s important to let them know. There are in my opinion, to many » girls can’t do it well» in the metal scene and not enough » waw she’s super talented». Most of the time we re said to be pretty or nice, it’s pleasant of course, but I prefer when people say that, pretty or not, girl or guy, I have a killer voice. It’s important to let girls know that they are not only girls, they are humans, they are a person. Guys don’t have the exclusivity.

– Do you believe nowadays women in this world are valued as they deserve? Do you believe there has been a change for two decades up to nowadays regard the role they give them?

Women deserve to consider themselves and deserve to be considered by men, as human beings. Some progress have been made in that way, but not enough. People, say «MAN»kind and hu»MAN»kind, that says it all. The point is not on who makes diner, who cleans the house or who brings the money home. All that problems will be solved the day we ll consider women as persons. Gender is not a clearly definate thing in biology, you can be hermaphrodite or you can have two XX and half of a Y, you can have both of the human sexes, it is not a disease and it happens more often than we think… Then why should we put borders in our social lives?

–

Who you believe in the music it is more qualified to express pain, sadness… men or women? Why?

I deeply believe that both are equaly able to express their feelings, There are very sensitive men and very unsensitive women as there are idiots in both kinds. It’s more a question of person than a question of gender, really.

– Can you tell us more bands of the style of MONARCH with feminine members? And bands with women in their line-up of different styles?

For slow bands there is Thorr’s Hammer, 13 and Noothgrush but they all broke up years ago, Otesanek who unfortunately also just broke up, Sea Wizard, Salome, Totem, Grey Daturas, Electric Wizard and others I can’t recall right now.
