– Hola Mike! Primero de todo gracias por tu apoyo e interés en Queens of Steel respondiéndonos a nuestras preguntas y enhorabuena por vuestro «Under Satanae».

El placer es todo mío!!!

– Vuestro último trabajo es «Under Satanae», que es una regrabación de vuestro EP «Under the Moonspell», ¿por qué decidísteis hacer ésto?

Estábamos cansados de escuchar a los fans quejarse de que no podían encontrar el material antiguo!!! Y también mucha gente no tenía ni idea de que tuvimos un pasado oscuro y pesado!!! Creo que fue una gran oportunidad traer a estas canciones de nuevo a la vida y darles la calidad de sonido que merecen!!! Y estoy muy orgulloso de estas canciones!!! Fueron de grabaciones de garaje a canciones grabadas en un sello!!! Un sueño hecho realidad!!

– En «Under Satanae» también podemos encontrar una canción de vuestra demo cuando érais MORBID GOD y el resto son de la demo «Anno Satanae», ¿qué nos puedes explicar de la época en la que grabásteis vuestras primeras demos? ¿Cuáles eran entonces vuestras influencias?

En aquella época escuchábamos mucha música underground!! Bathory, Celtic Frost, Venom, Morbid Angel… muy buenos grupos de Metal!!! Éramos muy jóvenes y queríamos lo mejor para esas canciones!! Pero la calidad de los estudios, instrumentos y los sitios de ensayo eran muy pobres!!! Ésto nos hacía parecer un grupo muy poco profesional!!! Pero teníamos mucha pasión y visión de lo que queríamos conseguir!!! Los primeros principios de Moonspell!!! Buenísimo!!!

– ¿Qué cambios habéis hecho a las canciones y cómo es su sonido?

Intentamos mantener las atmósferas lo más parecidas posibles a las originales!!! Pero con un estudio más decente y después de más de 10 años tocando por todo el mundo sabíamos qué hacer!!! Hacerlas lo más rigurosas y emocionantes posible!!! Vaya subidón!!!

– Creo que podemos notar algunos cambios musicales en MOONSPELL a lo largo de vuestra carrera. Los primeros MOONSPELL eran más pesados, podría decirse que más Black Metal, puede que más parecidos a lo que fue el sonido MORBID GOD, un sonido más pesados que creo que se nota menos en discos como «The Antidote», pero con vuestro «Memorial» volvísteis a vuestras raíces con un sonido más similar al que tocábais en vuestros principios, ¿fue ésto algo deliverado?

No realmente!!! Hemos tomado muchas direcciones diferentes y a veces incluso nos hemos aburrido de nosotros mismos!!! Es algo muy duro cuando eres músico!!! Te acabas cansando de lo que has hecho!!! Hubo un tiempo en que nos sentimos así con nuestro antiguo material!!! La gran oportunidad es que hemos encontrado quienes realmente somos y actualmente respetamos ésto más que a nada!!! Simplemente queremos hacer la mejor música posible!! Escuchar a nuestros fans más cercanos también ayuda mucho!! Escuchar lo que sienten cuando escuchan la música!!! A veces es una forma de mirarte a ti mismo!! Es bueno que sea recordado! Así que seguro que ésto fue algo natural que pasa con la edad!!!

– Me imagino que esta variedad musical es también, entre otras cosas, debido a una gran variedad musical, ¿cuáles son vuestras influencias?

A todos nos encantan diferentes cosas!!! Tenemos una gran combinación entre buenas influencias de Metal y grupos góticos Avantgarde de los 80!! Nos encanta Depeche Mode como nos volvemos locos con con Celtic Frost!! Creo que es porque al venir de un país del sur de Europa estamos más abiertos a más diferencias!! Al estar aislado de la música y que haya escasez de cultura musical, cualquiera música extrema nos gustaba.

– Ahora estáis trabajando en vuestro próximo disco, ¿qué nos puedes anticipar sobre él?

Como he escrito estamos trabajando el él!!! Jeje. Estamos muy inspirados en este momento!!! La época más delicada!!! Pero creo que será un álbum muy romántico pero extremo!! Si es que tiene sentido!! Jeje. Por supuesto tiene todo lo que más nos gusta!!! Que incluye Black Metal a Goth!!! Algo que realmente todavía no habíamos probado!!! Veremos!!! Nunca se sabe hasta que no está grabado del todo!!! Es entonces cuando surge la magia!!!

– Ahora hagamos preguntas típicas… ¿Por qué MOONSPELL?

Porque tenía que ver con la naturaleza y las noches oscuras!!! Algo más poderoso que las palabras!!! Un nombre es un nombre!!! Pero Moonspell es, por supuesto, mi vida!!!! Ha influenciado mucho!!! Siempre me ha sorprendido lo que, simplemente, un nombre, puede hacer!!!!!

– ¿Y qué significa en tu vida?

Creo que ya he contestado a ésto!!! Pero déjame decir que empecé cuando tenía 16 años y ha sido parte de toda mi vida adulta!!! Así que sin Moonspell realmente no sabría como sería mi vida!!! He madurado y aprendido mucho de mis compañeros de grupo, hemos crecido juntos y estamos más cercanos que nunca!!! Creo que en ésto es en lo que somos diferentes a muchas bandas!!! Hemos estado juntos después de las peores situaciones!!! Seguimos vivos y respirando!!!

– Creo que hoy en día no es fácil sobrevivir en la industria musical y menos en un país donde uno de los pocos grupos que conocemos es MOONSPELL, ¿cómo lo hacéis después de estos años tocando? Y, ¿cómo es la escena metalera en Portugal? ¿Nos puedes nombrar alguna banda?

Filli Nigratum Infernalium!!! Simbiose,Decayed,Sacred Sin,Fever,The Temple, Cinemuerte!! Y muchas más!!!! Pero nuestra escena, desafortunadamente, es muy pobre!!! Aún necesitamos en el mundo más grupos girando para aprender lo que realmente pasa!!! Sólo conocemos lo que vemos en la televisión o en internet!!! Tienes que ir a la carretera y arriesgarlo todo!!!

– Alguna gente dice que una de las razones por las cuales es difícil mantenerse en la industria musical es debido a internet, pero creo que es una buena forma para conocer nuevos, antiguos y grupos underground, por lo tanto, más fans = más conciertos. ¿Qué opinas sobre internet?

Creo que es una forma genial para promocionar tu material!!! No teníamos ésto cuando empezamos, así que conseguir una discográfica era siempre muy importante. Vender discos no es lo que solía ser!!! Pero tenemos que adaptarnos y hacer lo que podamos!!! Intentamos tener ediciones especiales, dar buenas actuaciones en directo y cualquier cosa que podamos hacer para mentener a los fans interesados por el grupo!!! A veces no es f&a
acute;cil. Nos gustaría que hubiera más protección para los artistas, pero la gente siempre hará lo que quiera si no puede pagar!!! Un mal hábito humano!!! Pero muchos nos apoyan y ésos son los únicos que importan!!!!

– Cuidas tu MySpace e imagino que estás en contacto con tus fans, ¿crees que estar en contacto con tus seguidores es importante para cualquier grupo?

En estos días, con todo el acceso tan fácil entre el uno y el otro, creo que cobra sentido!!! Es el extra, que el grupo sea accesible para cualquier persona que esté interesada!!! Cuando éramos jóvenes grabamos con finalidades de negocio y tuvimos que esperar 2 semanas a que nos llegara por correo!!! Fue genial escribir a gente que no conocías excepto por la conexión por el Metal!!! Fue genial!!! Y ahora podemos tener todo éso a gran escala!!! Increíble formar parte de todo ésto!!! Me encanta tener un concierto y leer los comentarios al día siguiente, y a veces horas después!!! Una pasada!!!

-Your last work it’s «Under Satanae», that is a re-record of your EP «Under

 

the Moonspell», why did you decide to do this?

We were sick of listenning to fans complain that they coudn´t find the old stuff!!! And also many people had know idea we had juch a heavy and dark past!!! I think it was great chance to bring these songs back to life and give them the sound quaility they deserve!!! I am very proud of these songs!!! They went from garage tapes to major recording!! A dream come true!!

-In «Under Satanae» we can also find a track of your demo when you were

 

MORBID GOD and the rest are from «Anno Satanae» demo, what can you explain

us about the period when you recorded your first demos? Which where then

your influences?

We listed to a lot of underground music at the time!! Bathory , Celtic Frost, Venom, Morbid Angel so many good metal bands!!! We were very young and wanted the best for these songs!! But the quality of studios ,instruments, and rehearsal places were very poor!!! This made us look like a very unprofessional band!! But had so much passion and vision for what we wanted to acomplish!!! The very begginning of Moonspell!!! Crazy!!!

-What changes did you make to the songs and what are they sound like?

We trid to keep the atmosphere as close to the original as possible!!! But with a proper studio and more than 10 years of playing around the world we new what to doo!!! Make them as tight and exciting as possible!!! What a trip!!

-I think we can notice a few musical changes on MOONSPELL during your career. The first MOONSPELL albums were heavier, maybe more Black Metal, could be more similar to MORBID GOD’s sound, a heavy sound that I think it’s less in albums as «The Antidote», but with your «Memorial» you went back to your roots with a similar sound to the one yo used to play in your beginning, was that something deliverated?

Not really!!! we have gone many diferent directions and sometimes even gotten bored of our selves!!! This is very hard when you are a musician!!! you just get sick of what you have done!!! There was a time when we felt like that with our old stuff!!! The big change is that we have found who we really are and respect that more than anything these days!!! We just want to make the best music possible !! listenning to our closest fans also helps a lot!! To listen to what they feel when they hear the music!!! It´s kinda looking at your self sometimes!! It´s good to be reminded ! So for sure this was natural to happen with age!!!

-I guess that this variety in your music it’s, among other things, due to a

 

great variety of influences as well, which are your biggest influences?

We all love diferent stuff!!! We have a strong combination of good metal influences with the best avantgarde goth bands from the 80´s !! We love Depeche Mode as we go crazy over Celtic Frost!! i think it´s because coming from the south of Europe we are more open to major difrences!! Being isolated from music and a lack of music cuture anything that was extreme it it´s owne way we liked.

– You are currently working in your next album, what can you anticipate us about

 

it?

We are working on it as i write!!! he he We are very inspired at the moment!!! The most fragile time!! But i think it will be a very Romantic but extreme album!! If that makes anysense!! he he For sure we are going for all that touches us the most!!! That includes Black metal to Goth!!! Somting that we havn´t really tried yet!!! Let´s see!!! You never know until it´s finally recorded!!! that when the magic happens!!!!

-Now let’s ask a tipically questions… why MOONSPELL?

Becaues it has to do with nature and the dark nights!!! Soming that is more powerful than words!!! A name is a name!!! But Moonspell is for sure my life!!!! It has influenced many!!! It always surprises me what just a name can do!!!!!

-And what does it means in your life?

i think i already answered that!!! But let me say that i started when i was 16 and has been part of my whole adult life!!! So with out Moonspell i really wouldn´t know what my life would be like!!! i have matured and learned so much from my band mates, we´ve grown up together and are closer than ever!!! i think that is were we are very diferent from other bands!!! We have sticked together after the worst situations!!! We are still alive a breathing!!!

-I think nowadays it’s not easy to survive in the music industry and less in

 

a country where one of the few bands we know are MOONSPELL, how do you do it

after all those years playing?

How it’s like the Metal scene in Portugal? Can you name us any bands?

Filli Nigratum Infernalium!!! Simbiose,Decayed,Sacred Sin,Fever,The Temple, Cinemuerte!! and many more!!!! But our scene is very poor unfortunatly!!! Still need more bands touring in the world to learn for real what is going on!!! We only know what we see on tv and on the net!!! You got to go on the road and risk it all!!!

-Some people say that one of the reasons why it’s hard to stand into the

 

music industry it’s because the Internet but I think that Internet’s a good

way to know new, old and underground bands so, more fans = more shows. What

do you think about the Internet?

I think it is a great way to promote your stuff!!! we did not have that when we started so to get a label it was always more important. Selling albus is not what it use to be!!! But we
have to adapt and do what you can!!! We try to have special editions, give great live shows and anything we can to keep fans interested in the band!!! It´s not easy sometimes. Wish there was more protection for the arists, but people will always get what they want if they can not pay!!! Bad human habit!!! But many support us and those are the ones that matter!!!!

-You take care of your MySpace and I guess you are in contact with your

 

fans, do you think being in contact with your fans it’s important for any

band?

These days with all the easy access to each other i think it makes sense!!! It´s the extra that bands needed to reach out to everyone that is interested!!! When we were young we tape traded and had to wait 2 weeks to get it in the mail!!! It was great to write to people you didn´t know except for the conection for metal!!! That was great!!! And now we can have all that at a huge scale!!! Awsome to be part of all this!!!Love to have a show and read the comments on the day after and sometimes hours after!!! Wierd!!!!
