– Hello and first of all, thanks for taking the time. How is everything doing right now with LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE? What are you currently up to?

No prob, you´re welcome! Yeah we feel a bit the pressure and we´re nervous, the release is near!

– You will soon release your new album, entitled «Antiadore». What are your expectations on it? And how are the first reactions being?

It´s our tenth studio album and it will be released in our 20th anniversary, so our expectations are huge! You know, 20 years, and we are still doing this, I´m honored to be able to do this, I can´t put in words how much this means to me.

– Have been three years between your two last albums so, what could you say are the main musical differences between this new «Antiadore» and your previous «The Grandiose Nowhere»?

the last three years I composed almost every day, I recorded every single idea. You know, Songwriting’s a weird game, if you wanted to create something special that lasts for eternity you have to throw yourself into the unknown and see what happens, I think this is what rocknroll means, to lose yourself in music! Or in another words: Making an album is very similar to people talking about woodstock—»If you remember it, you weren’t there.” Hahaha! This time we tried to absorb all our influences and feelings we had the last 20 years and spit it in this album. We work together with Hiili Hiilesmaa from Finland (Sentenced, Apocalyptica, HIM) as pre-producer and Tue Madsen (Heaven Shall Burn, Moonspell, The Haunted) as mix, Mastering Engineer and with Christopher, he did some Backing vocals and the screams and grunts for «My release in pain» and Ricky Warwick, we compose the Track «Head held high» together we had tons of things we changed in this album! You know, every year you experiencing so many things, you see new countries, meet new people, this changes your history and yourself as person and quite automatically your music. You have simply more to tell! We wanted to allow every piece influenced us the last 20 years. From “At the Gates” to “Paradise Lost” to “Anathema”! About “Remembrance Song” I read some comparisons to “Iron Maiden”, we use riffs for example at the track “What I´m not” that also could be on a «Godsmack» album, “Dead to me” is in the mood of Katatonia and “all for nothing” could be also on Anathema´s latest output! So take the essence and you almost get the new album! I think you can hear the dust on the streets, as well as we sit in the studio, put the amp on and plug the guitar in. I don´t know, every band enthuse their upcoming album, what I say now sounds kitschy, but I can´t describe with other words: we made the record we are dreaming about! We´re glad that after our gig in Wacken Festival in 2011 the «Metal» is back in our music! I think I’ve never felt so good about an album throughout my entire career.

– This opus is your first record with the drummer Dominik so, what could you say has he brought to LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE?

We change the way of songwriting a little bit, I recorded my guitar tunes at home and send it to dominik and Rob including my ideas and dominik played the drums to the tracks, sent it back and calls me, we did some changes together and sent it back and we did this for a while…

– After giving «Antiadore» some spins I could say you are still shaping and solidifying your own sound, could you agree on this? As I guess there’s always an aim to keep evolving and developing your music.

Yeah, its always important to give every record some spins, cause the stuff you like for the frist time didn´t last forever but if you spent some time and give the music a chance it lasts for eternity

– You have also got a perfect mix between catchy choruses/melodies and your usual darkness and melancholy, which creates a really interesting contrast. How important are this kind of contrasts for LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE?

yeah with this record we wanted not just to talk about to work with this guy, or did the master there, or would be cool to do this…, we wanted to do it!! It´s our 20th anniversary, so we´re looking for an Album that will present a cross section and the Leading threads through our entire history! The main point is the heaviness! As I was a kid I adore my good old records especially because of the raw sound of the guitar riffs, the deep kickdrum that hammer in your stomach and I love different drum grooves like my favorite drummer Shannon Larkin of Godsmack plays! We left the drummer more space for new breaks and beats we changed the key signature on some tracks to make it perfect for Robs voice, so I think we´ve found the perfect mix! No intro, no outro, no keyboardlandscapes with horse trampling or whore groaning, only 14 songs, no space between and after 51.05 the show is over and your jaw is dropping or not, there is nothing in-between!We wanted a record for the head, the soul and the balls!

– In fact I could say this is your most diverse effort to date, having different dynamics, different nuances and, as always, you seem to be influenced by different music styles so, would you mind to tell us what are some of the main musical influences for the band?

The whole album is about I bought my first songbook: OVERKILL and Years of decay, if you be able to play ELIMINATION, still the best riff in my opinion, you think you´re the owner of the world, And it’s about the Lead melody of At the Gates in «with fear I kissed the burning darkness», everything from Anathema to HIM and back to Sentenced, its about the musical milestones that made me want to do what I do, made the band want to do what they do, and kind of got us all together.

– Again, lyrics explore the darkest human feelings, and seem to be quite real and passionate. Due to this I would like to know where do you draw inspiration from to create them and what where some special inspirations behind some of the lyrics on this brand new «Antiadore».

This way, that way! Some of the stories are happening but, for sure we exaggerate a little, some could happen and others are completely invented! There is the cliché that lyrics in RocknRoll always deals with just one topic: „my baby left me…“ we say YES, but in our lyrics we complement „but now I don´t care anymore“ and something like this you can find in almost every song! Sadly lyrics like „I´m a wild child“ of WASP or „Don´t eat yellow” of Frank Zappa are already written, so whats left to say! (laughs)

– In fact it seems your music is like an outlet for your own feelings and thoughts, is it actually like this or is it just my perception? What’s your music for you?

It´s cool to have this possibility to tell what you feel, express your feelings and if you´re angry, leave it all from the bottom of your heart. My music is what I wanted to do my whole life!

– All this about «Antiadore» being said; how could you describe it in just 3 words?

Antiadore, by, Lacrimas

– For all those who may don’t know about it, you started two decades ago as a Doom Metal band, and slowly turned into a more Goth oriented band. What prompted that kind of evolution? Will be possible some change of direction would happen again?

You know every Musician is on a never ending search. A search for new challenges, for the next drink or the door to the tourbus hahaha! We are on this search for new festivals, visit new countries, meet new people, there´s so much more to discover, so never say never!

– As I said, you were formed two decades ago, and this exact year you are celebrating the band’s 20th anniversary so, any special plans?

We start right now our Tour in Germany and UK, in July we went for the first time to Finland and in Summer we re-release our first two sold out records via pledge and in autumn a acousticalbum! So, I hope 2013 turns into all, but not boring!

– That has been everyting from my side, thank you once more for taking your time. If you now want to add any last words; feel free to do it.

Thanx a lot for the interview! RIP Jeff, Oliver Nikolas Schmid
