– Hello, thank you so much for answering our interview. How is everything doing right now with BARONESS?

Things are very busy. We are on tour right now in Europe for 7 weeks this summer. We also are about 10 days away from our album coming out. The energy is good and we are all working very hard.

– First off, how did you come up with the band’s name?

We have been asked this question about 100 times and never revealed why we are named Baroness.

– You have a new album coming out soon entitled “Yellow & Green”. What are your expectations?

We expect to tour the world and hopefully our fans with enjoy our new album. I never want to expect something from a release, because you always have the chance to be let down.

– All your albums make reference to different colours; what does this represent? And what about the name of the new album specially?

This is a way for us to catalog our material, just like First and Second were. The colors are simple names for albums that have dense material.

– I personally this new opus is your most complete effort to date as it explores all lands in your sound, taking it to the next level. Could you say this is your ultimate record?

I think this album is something we have all wanted to make at some point in this band. Im not sure that it is our best effort, but we are all very proud of it and hope people enjoy it.

– It’s impressive the way you’ve managed to create different dynamics and twists blending this with an emotional yet personal sound. Is this balance something easy to get? As I think some bands have made people think complete structures/songwriting are opposite to a natural and emotional sound.

As long as you are true to yourself while you are writing the material than you can never go wrong. Song structure or no song structure there is going to be a personal sound and emotion will come through. Just be true in how you are writing the songs.

– Due to this I would also like to know how the songwriting for this new CD was like. Was it something spontaneous or is everything planned?

Some songs took months to finish. We would go back to them and keep changing parts. As for others they were written in a day. No song was written or recorded the same way.

Some came quicker than others and felt complete with out critiquing them too much.

– I’d dare say “Yellow & Green” is your most melodic and Rock n’ Roll piece thus far. Is this how you envisioned the album since the beginning? Was this different approach something you consciously wanted to get?

We knew we wanted to push ourselves vocally and song writing wise. The vocals ended up being very melotic and catchy with the song structures. Its been a path that we have been on for some time. Its just more realized on this album.

– After releasing an album like “Blue Record”, which was highly-acclaimed both from the fans and press. Do you think this subtly different “approach” will be easily accepted by your fans?

I don’t expect our fans to get the record immediately. But in the end it’s the same people writing this music that have since the beginning, The same ethos was put into this piece of work. The music is somewhat different but we all believe in it and that is what is most important.

– Anyway you haven’t gone far to your personality, it’s like you’ve shaped it even more. Is evolution something important for BARONESS?

Evolution and progress is what Baroness is grounded on. We are not a band that will release the same album twice. We are unable to. We are not those types of people creatively and personally.

– And what kind of impact do you think this melody has in contrast with your really heavy and thick usual sound?

Melody is something very important to Baroness. We connect with melody in music, as most people do. The definition of “heavy” to me has changed as I have become older. Music can hit me even more in the same way than just being loud and aggressive or “heavy”… But, I think when they are combined its even more impressive.

– In fact bass lines have a lot to do with this heaviness, and this has been your first full-length release with bass player Matt. How is everything going with him so far?

Matt is a great friend of everyone in the band. We are very excited to have him be apart of this stage in Baroness. He’s a pleasure to have on tour and keeps a positive outlook at all times. Great guy.

– You’ve been touring and writing constantly for the last 3 years. Has this experience and time helped you getting elaborating a more solid opus? In fact this is a double album, where have you taken inspiration from?

We take inspiration from all different places. Musically I take inspiration from very unorthodox places. Records that no one could see how they have influenced me for Baroness records. These are the places to find something fresh and too keep the music different.

– All this being said; how could you describe “Yellow & Green” in just 3 words?

Lots Of Work

– All your covers are just superb, and I’ve always thought they all have a really strong and recognizable personality. Once more, John has crafted this new cover. What does it represent? And how important is the artwork for BARONESS? As, as I’ve said, they always have the band’s stamp.

The artwork is a very important aspect to Baroness. How we represent ourselves visually coincides with our music. The album covers always have some sort of content that is taken from our lives around the time the record is written.

– And what do some of the lyrics on this “Yellow & Green” deal with?

There are dark periods and uplifting periods in the record. The lyrics run the gamut. It is a very personal record. So, its main focus is our lives.

– This year you will be touring constantly, you will even come to Spain. What are your expectations with this tour?

I love Spain and always look forward to going when we are on tour. The people are some of the best in the world and I always have great food and drink. We have not played in Space for a few years now, so we are looking forward to playing and hanging out.

– So that has been everything from our side, thank you once more for taking your time. If you now want to add some final words; feel free to do it.

Look forward to seeing you on the road!
