– Hi Mr. Tony Martin and thanks for your attention and time. We can start with the questions if you agree. You will soon release your third album, with the Mollo/Martin project, which is entitled “Third Cage”; what are your expectations with this new effort?

With sales or in regard?? … I dont think the sales will amount to a great deal, the industry is too messed up, but i hope it is recieved with high regard.

– How is your relationship with Dario Mollo? Is it easy to work with him?

Sometimes!!!!! …. Mostly we work from our own studios, and then Dario mixes it together afterwards. So we only see each other a few times.

– Mollo/Martin has been many years without recording any new material, since “The Cage”, recorded in 1997. Do you know the main reason behind this?

Well this album took 4 years to make and we both had other stuff going on which took priority.

– I had the pleasure of listening to your new piece together and I was really surprised with how your style changes in most part of the “Third Cage” record. In general, it’s heavier and more Metal than the two previous albums. What’s the cause and the intention behind this style change? And who was the responsible of it?

It was by accident, Dario sends me lots of riffs and i cut them up and arrange them into a form i can sing over then i add melodies and lyrics….. But if it doesnt work we dont use it, so it all depends on what i put together.

Again it was by accident, i actually wasnt asked about that choice, Dario made that decision and i did comment after that it didnt represent the album, but then non of the songs represent the album because of the variation we get out of it.

– And now I want to ask you something about which probably is the most melodic song on “Third Cage”: “One of the few”. I must confess it’s my favorite song on this record. But what was the reason to feature this song in such a powerful piece?

This is one of the problems with the Cage project, we have so many different kinds of music that its hard to put it in a box. «One of the few» was the first track to be written.

– Moving a bit from this subject. This past 2011 you have worked collaborating in different projects as BLACK WIDOW, ARRAYAN PATH or WOLFPAKK. Which have been your favorite or the most pleasurable collaboration? And why?

Aha! You have done some homework….. well Black Widow was easy, the guys were great and it sounded like a cool thing to do, Arrayan Path was a session that came to me by request, but i enjoyed that cause i got to play with choir voices which i did myself, Wolfpack was another session that came to me via a request, but I am quite good friends with Micheal Voss and he sends me stuff to sing on from time to time, i have done about 4 sessions with him.

– You have played with many great musicians throughout your vast and successful musical career. What are (on your view) the best ones? Both as individual and as musicians. And would you like to play with some artists with whom you haven’t worked yet?

My kids!!!!! they are awesome!!!!!! …. All the players i have worked with were excellent, it usually comes down to personalities, some you get along with and some you dont, but they are all great players!!! …….. As you would expect.

– I apologize for the next question but, it’s really important to ask you about BLACK SABBATH and their recent reunion with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals. What do you think about this? What do you wish for their future?

I really dont give it any thought, I would say that its one of the few big names that can still put a reunion together with ALL the original members, which cant happen forever!! But apart from that i havent given it any thought.

– Still about this topic. How is your relationship with the original BLACK SABBATH members? What do you think about Ozzy and his vocal duties?

Sabbath havent spoken to me for 15 years, I have no idea what the current state of affairs is within the band.

No, I already know the band and its history and musical abilities, theres nothing much new there to see.

– Back to the new Mollo/Martin album… Do you plan touring in support of “Third Cage”? And if so, will be possible to see you soon on stage?

I dont think i would tour the Cage project, I cant see it being very successful, but i have Dario Mollo in my band for a show this summer and we will play some Cage songs. I have to say its almost impossible to make touring pay these days, most people expect me to work for free so i stopped touring.

– If you had to choose only one album of your whole discography, which one would be?

I think Cross purposes stands up, but all of them are cool apart from «Forbiden»

– And finally, talking about your solo career, what could you tell us about it? Have you thought about recording a new solo album anytime soon?

I have plans for more solo works but only if i have more control over it,

– That’s all, Mr. Martin. Thank you for your answers and for taking your time. If you want to add something, is your time.

Thanks Alex , its been a sombre start to this year for us with my father having a nasty accident and so christmas and new year celebrations were cancelled for us…. we are ALL hoping for a better new year.

– Thanks, Tony Martin. I wish you all the best in this New Year 2012. Thank you very much.

Alex M. Romero
