– Hi, thanks for your time. What are you currently up to? How is everything doing right now with SUPURATION?
we’re into the promotion of «CU3E» our new album, everything is ok, we’ve a new record company and I must say that we’ve tons of things to do, preparing the future shows, rehearsing, travelling from places to other places for the promotion, that’s great, really.
– First off, for all those who may don’t know about you yet (you’ve been around for over two decades now though), could you please make some history of the band?
Quickly, we started the band in 1990, after some cd demos, we recorded our first album «THE CUBE» in 1992 (out in 1993), and a mini cd «STILL IN THE SPHERE» in 1994. Then we went on tour in Europe several times and during 1995 we decided to change the band into S.U.P (spherical unit provided) a more experimental concept. With S.U.P we recorded several albums like ANOMALY (1995), TRANSFER (1996), ROOM SEVEN (1997), CHRONOPHOBIA (1999), TO LIVE ALONE (2000 CD, DVD LIVE), ANGELUS (2002), INCUBATION ( 2003 second SUPURATION album, a prequel of the album «the cube»), 9092 ( 2004 SUPURATION’s demos re edition including archives on dvd), HOLY PARTY (2005 SUPURATION live on DVD), IMAGO (2005), HEGEMONY (2007), meanwhile we recorded several original soundtracks for shorts and long movies. During 2009, we were thinking about a new SUPURATION album which would be the end of the trilogy «the cube»
– You will soon release your new album, «Cu3e». First off, why did you pick such title? What’s the meaning behind it?
«CU3E» is the end of the story «THE CUBE» we started 20 years ago . As far as the story is concerned you have in order : INCUBATION 2003, THE CUBE 1993 and CU3E 2013, each album is linked to the other. It’s a whole story throughout 3 albums extended over 20 years.
– As it will hit the street in a month; what are your expectations on this new opus?
Of course, we hope, we’ll have a good response from the people, I guess our fans won’t be dissapointed with it and people who don’t know us will be interested in our style and our concept.
– You are a singular band, you have released 3 albums, all of them in the year ending by 3 of each decade. What’s the meaning on this?
When we recorded the prequel of «THE CUBE» called «INCUBATION» in 2003 we thought it would be a good idea to create a trilogy with this story, by recording an album every 10 years and some S.U.P albums between each of them. It’s a brand new concept. We like the way it’s taking form ‘till now.
– And could you say releasing an album per decade gives you compositive freedom and the necessary time to perfect everything on your records?
No, we’ve been really busy with S.U.P between each SUPURATION album, realeasing a SUPURATION album is quite easy for us because each album is a part of a whole and unique story, it’s inspire us a lot, of course we took our time to compose the music and lyrics recording demos and rehearsing. We are a «busy» band…
– Your albums are characterized due to the fact all of them are conceptual. Elaborate a bit on the concept on this new «Cu3e».
«CU3E» is simply the end of the story of «THE CUBE», as I Told you before each album is linked to the other in order to create a complete metaphysical story from 1993 to 2013. «CU3E» takes place in outer space, where the soul of «THE CUBE» album had to be reincarnate in a baby who will be educate by machines and artificial intelligences….
– Musically, where do you draw inspiration from to create such well thought-out sounds and so experimental lyrics?
We are great fans of science fiction and fantastic stories, books and movies, with this trilogy «THE CUBE», we experimented a new way of concept throughout music, especially in a metal style.
– Has the songwriting process been changing throughout the years or do you use to compose on a similar way?
Both in reality, of course the process changed, but you can hear from now and then some similar sentences with the two other albums. But the fact that «CU3E» would take place in outer space is quite recent.
– This effort has also an awesome sound, in fact was mastered in Sweden by veteran Dan Swanö. Are you satisfied with the work done by him? He seems to have a great ear for your style.
You’re right, we like his way of working, it’s first time that an external person worked on one of our mastering, we are not dissapointed, we’d love to work with Dan Swanö in the future, he’s a master.
– This has also been your first opus with your conuntrymates Listenable Records. How is everything going with him so far? Do you feel is a good home for SUPURATION?
Absolutely, we know each other for a long time now, we signed quite quickly with listenable rcds, it’s simple, straight, the way we wanted for the new SUPURATION album, a real pleasure!
– On the other hand, the artwork was crafted once more by Matthieu Carton. Could you please tell us what did you want to reflect on it?
It’s Matthieu’s view of the concept, we sent the lyrics a few weeks before the realease of the album and he did his own way, we trust him, he’s an artist. On the cover we can see a floating_in_the_air crying baby in the eye of his dead mother’s eye burned by the cold of the outer space. All of our three albums are in black & red colors since the beginning.
– All this about «Cu3e» being said; how could you describe it in just 3 words?
Enigmatic, metaphysical , sincere.
– 10 years between each album is a long time so, how could you say have you evolved musically both in the band as individually?
As i said before , with S.U.P we evolved in a different style, an experimental one, but musically we never stopped, SUPURATION and S.U.P are our bands, I must admit that we always had SUPURATION in our souls and deep in our hearts. We evolved all in the same way.
– And how do you think has the French Metal scene volved? Do you see it as an insider? Any bands worth suggesting?
A lot of good bands, a great evolution since the 90’s, bands like dylathleen, hacride, outcast, kalisia, and others…there are so numerous really!!
– Finally, what are your near-future plans?
Playing live to present to the audience what is «the cube» is dealing with…playing «THE CUBE» in its integrality, several «CU3E» and «INCUBATION» songs and some songs from the very beginning like «SULTRY OBSESSION» mini cd. Doing some promotion for the new album and thinking about the future….now we are focussed on SUPURATION.
