Johnny Lima

Hablamos con Johnny Lima, un polifacético solista Californiano, el cual toca la guitarra, compone, cantanta y produce sus discos y nos adelanta que ya está trabajando en su próximo álbum.

-Primero de todo, ¿puedes explicarnos brevemente cómo ha sido tu carrera en solitario?

 

Ha habido muchos altibajos. La música es un negocio duro en el que estar. Si no me gustara tanto hacer música, lo habría dejado hace mucho tiempo.

 

-¿Y ahora puedes explicarnos tu comienzo en el mundo musical?

 

Mis padres me compraron mi primera guitarra cuando tenía 12 años. Todavía recuerdo lo nervioso que estaba cuando vi por primera vez mi guitarra y el ampli. A veces me saltaba el colegio sólo para poder ir a casa y tocar. Empecé a tocar en muchos grupos locales y me mudé a San Francisco Bay Area para empezar mi primer grupo «pro». Se llamaba Cheshire Cat. Después de Cheshire Cat empecé un grupo llamado Attitude. Fueron tiempos emocionantes. Todas las cosas buenas tienen un final y Attitude nos separamos poco después de un año de estar juntos. Escribí muchísimas canciones y decidí grabar un disco en solitario. Mis padres me dieron el dinero para grabar el disco y me fue muy bien. Di mi nombre a conocer. Entonces firmé un contrato con «Now and Then Production» que es un sello discográfico de Europa. Después de dos discos, me separé de ellos. Entonces regrabé mi álbum debut ya que estaba descatalogado. Se grabó en Europa via «Escape Music» y distribuído en todo el mundo independientemente de la distruibuición digital.

 

-Empezaste tu carrera hace más de una década, ¿cómo y cuándo decidiste hacer de la música tu vida? ¿O no fue algo deliverado?

 

Supe que quería hacer música desde la primera vez que escuché a KISS en al televisión. Me gustaban muchísimo KISS, era divertido. La música siempre ha sido una gran parte de mi vida desde que era un niño pequeño. Así que era natural que acabara siendo músico.

 

-Para toda esa gente que no te conoce, ¿cómo describirías tu sonido?

 

Es música que puedes cantar y con la que mover el culo. ¡Música de buen rollo!

 

-¿Cuáles son tus mayores influencias?

 

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, AC/DC y por supuesto KISS.

 

-En tu perfil de MySpace podemos leer que el verano que viene estará editado tu próximo disco, ¿qué nos puedes anticipar sobre él?

 

Aún estoy en la pre-producción del disco, pero todo lo que puedo decir es que las nuevas canciones son las mejores que he escrito nunca. Creo que a mucha gente le va a gustar este disco.

 

-Hablando sobre herramientas de Internet… ¿Estás en contacto con tus fans? ¿Crees que estar en contacto con los seguidores es importante para cualquier grupo?

 

Sí, siempre estoy disponible para que mis fans me encuentren a través de Internet. Creo que es muy importante permanecer en contacto con ellos. Ellos son los que compran mis discos, así que son la gente más importante en este negocio. No importa que tengas el mejor disco, trabajar con la mayor discográfica, etc. Nada de ésto tiene sentido sin los fans.

 

-MySpace e Internet en general, bajo mi punto de vista, es una buena forma para conocer grupos underground y no tan underground, ¿has notado en algo su influencia? ¿Crees que Internet es beneficioso o lo contrario?

 

Creo que Internet es una herramienta increíble. El negocio musical ha visto su mayor cambio por Internet. Ahora cualquier artista puede llegar a millones de personas con poco o sin dinero. Hace 10 años no podíamos hacer ésto. Páginas como MySpace, CDBABY, YouTube, etc. han incluso cambiado el campo de tocar. Ahora más que nunca los artistas sn capaces de vivir dignamente produciendo su música independientemente.

 

-Relacionado con cocniertos imagino que uno de los más importantes fue tu actuación en el God of AOR en Inglaterra, ¿qué recuerdos tienes de esta actuación?

 

Fue una experiencia increíble. Los fans europeos son únicos. Si no fuera por ellos seguiría luchando por hacerme un nombre por mí mismo. Fue, definitivamente, un momento mágico. Uno que estará conmigo por siempre.

 

-Para toda esa gente que no ha tenido la oportunidad de verte en directo, explícanos qué podemos encontrar sobre el escenario si vamos a ver un concierto de Johnny Lima.

 

Verás a un artista que está encantado de estar en el escenario. Nunca he sido el tipo de persona que se queda plantado sobre sus zapatos cuando estoy encima del escenario. Si te gusta ver un concierto dinámico y enérgico, te gustará verme en directo. Primero y principalmente son entretenidor. Así que espera estar entretenido.

 

-Hoy en día parece que están empezando grupos interesantes de AOR y Rock Melódico, especialmente en el norte de Europa, también podemos encontrar reediciones de los 80, reuniones de grupos… ¿crees que podemos hablar de un renacimiento del Rock?

 

Bueno, la música Rock nunca ha muerto. Siempre ha estado ahí. Creo que fue un conjunto de diferentes cosas para hacer un llamamiento a los tiempos que corrían, pero nunca dejó de estar ahí. Creo que lo que estamos viendo ahora es que es guay llevar el pelo largo otra vez, y es guay arreglarse. No ha habido «Rock Stars» o grupos entretenidos en mucho tiempo. Creo que la gente se estaba cansado de ver grupos que parecía que bombearan gas en lugar de estar en el escenario. Hay una nueva revolución y es realmente emocionante. El futuro parece brillante para los fans de grupos de Rock entretenidos. ¡Así que dejaros crecer el pelo y poneros eye-liner y a rockear!

 

-¿Puedes nombrarnos alguna banda nueva e interesante?

 

Mi preferida en este momento es Crashdïet. Me encanta el CD «Rest in Sleaze». Otros grupos que he descubierto hace poco y me gustan mucho son Hardcore Superstar, The Poodles, Rasmus y por supuesto Dirty Penny.

 

-Como ya sabrás, desde QUEENS OF STEEL intentamos ayudar y dar a conocer a la gente sobre grupos all-female o mixtos, ¿crees que, a lo largo de la historia, las mujeres en el Rock han sido valoradas como se merecían?

 

Rotundamente no. Creo que las mujeres en el Rock están totalmente infravaloradas y es una vergüenza. Creo que las mujeres roquean tan duro como lo hacen los hombres, si no más. También tienen que trabajar mucho más duro para hacerse notar.

 

-¿Puedes decirnos artistas femeninas que escuches?

 

Siempre me ha encantado Joan Jett. Es, probablemente, mi artista femenina de Rock preferida. Otras artistas femeninas que escucho son Jaime Kyle, Cori Yarkin, Evanescence, Carrie Underwood y Sha
nia Twain.

 

-Y, para acabar, ¿algo que decir a la gente que ha leído la entrevista? ¡Estas líneas son tuyas!

 

Simplemente quiero dar las gracias a mis fans de todo el mundo por si contínuo apoyo. Es por ellos por lo que hago ésto. Es por ellos por lo que tengo de nuevo fe en la música. ¡Son el «rock» que me hace «roll»!

-First of all, can you explain us briefly how it’s been like your solo career?

 

There’s been many ups and many downs. Music is a tough business to break into. If I didn’t love making music so much, I would have quit a long time ago.

 

-And now can you explain us your beginning in the music world

?

 

My parents bought me my first guitar at age 12. I still remember how excited I was to see my guitar and amp for the first time. I would sometimes skip school just so I can go home and play. I started playing in many local bands and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to start my first “pro” band. It was called Cheshire Cat. After Cheshire Cat I started a band called Attitude. Those were exciting times. All good things had to come to an end and Attitude broke up after a little more than a year of being together. I wrote a bunch of songs and decided to record a solo album. My parents gave me the money to record the album and it did pretty well for me. It got my name out there. I then signed a deal with Now and Then Productions, who were an up and coming record company in Europe. After two albums, I parted ways with them. Then I re-recorded my debut album since it was out of print. It was released in Europe via Escape Music and released everywhere else independently through digital distribution.

 

-You started you career more than a decade ago, when and why did you decide to make music your life? Or wasn’t something deliverated?

 

I knew I wanted to do music the first time I heard Kiss on TV. I was so into Kiss it was funny. Music has always been a huge part of my life since I was a little child. So it was just natural that I would end up being a musician.

 

-For all those people that don’t know about you, how would you describe your sound like?

 

It’s music that you can sing along to and shake your ass to. Feel Good Music!

 

-Which are your biggest influences?

 

Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, AC/DC and of course KISS.

 

-In your MySpace profile we can read next summer will be edited your next album, what can you anticipate about it?

 

I’m still in the pre-production stage of the album, but all I can say is the new songs are the best I’ve ever written. I think many people are going to be very pleased with this album.

 

-Talking about internet tools… are you in contact with your fans? Do you think being in contact with fans it’s important for any band?

 

Yes, I’m always available for my fans to reach me through the internet. I think it’s very important to remain in contact with them. They are the ones who buy the albums, so they’re the most important people in this business. Doesn’t matter if you have the best album, working with the biggest label etc. None of that means shit without the fans.

 

-MySpace and Internet in general, under my point of view, is a good way to know underground and not so underground bands, have you noticed in something it influence? Do you think Internet is benefecial or the opposite?

 

I think the internet is an awesome tool. The music business has seen the biggest change since the internet. Now any artist can reach millions of people with little or no money. 10 years ago we couldn’t do that. Sites like Myspace, CDBABY, YouTube, etc. have evened out the playing field. Now more than ever artists are able to make a decent living releasing their music independently.

 

-Related to gigs I guess one of the more importants was your performance at Gods of AOR show in England, which memories did you get of that show?

 

That was an awesome experience. The European fans are one of a kind. If it weren’t for them I’d still be struggling to make a name for myself. That was definitely a magical moment. One that will be with me forever.

 

-For all those people who didn’t have the chance to see you alive, explain us what can we find on stage if we are going to see a Johnny Lima’s gig.

 

You’ll see an artist who’s excited to be there on stage. I’ve never been the type to stare at my shoes while I’m up on stage. If you like to watch a dynamic, energetic show, then you’ll like seeing me live. First and foremost, I’m an entertainer. So expect to be entertained.

 

-Nowadays it seems there are starting really interesting AOR and Melodic Rock bands, specially from Northern Europe, we can also find 80’s reissues, band reunions… do you think can we talk about a Rock reborn?

 

Well, Rock music never died. It has always been around. I think it was packaged differently to appeal to the times, but it never went away. I think what we’re seeing now is that it’s cool to have long hair again, and it’s cool to dress up. There haven’t been any “Rock Stars” or entertaining bands in a long time. I think people were getting tired seeing these bands that looked like they should be pumping gas instead of being on stage. There’s a new revolution going on and it’s really exciting. The future looks bright for fans of entertaining rock bands. So grow out the hair and put on the eyeliner and let’s rock!

 

-Can you name any new and interesting band?

 

My favorite new band at the moment is Crashdiet. I really love the album “Rest In Sleaze”. Other bands that I recently discovered that I really enjoy are Hardcore Superstar, The Poodles, Rasmus, and of course Dirty Penny.

 

-As you may know from QUEENS OF STEEL we try to support and let know people about all-female bands or mixed bands, do you think along the history women in Rock had been valued as they deserved?

 

Absolutely not. I think women in rock are really underrated and it’s a shame. I think women rock just as hard as men do, if not more. They also have to work much harder to get noticed.

 

-Can you name us female artists you listen to?

 

I’ve always loved Joan Jett. She’s probably my favorite female rock artist. Other female artists that I listen to are Jaime Kyle, Cori Yarkin, Evanescence, Carrie Underwood, and Shania Twain.

 

-And for finishing, anything to say to all the people who has read the interview? These lines are yours!

 

I just want to thank all my fans from around the world for their continued support. It’s because of them that I do this. It’s because of them that I have a renewed faith for music again. They are th
