– Hello Thor, thanks for your time. This is your first album with MORBID ANGEL. Is this «Illud Divinum Insanus» what you expected?

No it was not. I mean, I was pretty surprised myself as well when I heard some of the material for the first time. Some of it are very unusual for Morbid, but then again I think the album came out great with a lot of good songs. I mean half of the record are still brutal Death metal for us who likes that. But these new stuff also states once and for all the fact that Morbid Angel was always different.

– Did you know from the beginning how did you want this record to sound like?

Hard to say how things eventually will turn out. I knew what I would go for when I did compose my two songs for the album which is “ Blades for Baal “ and “ 10 more Dead “. I love the fast, aggressive and brutal extreme metal, as you can hear out of the result. I think the songs came out great and that David did an awesome job with the vocal arrangements and lyrics on them.

– After listening to it and consdering the quite different approach, did you ever thought about recording it under a different name?

Absolutely not. We are still talking about Morbid Angel here which is a band of extreme high quality and has been that way ever since they started. Lets not forget that. I mean, some hate the new stuff on the album, other loves it. You cannot please them all! But it still contains a lot of Morbid the way it`s always been.

– Maybe having Tim Yeung instead of Pete Sandoval had something to do with this new approach? And has he had any imput in the songwriting?

It has nothing to do with having Tim in the band instead of Pete. He was not involved in the music writing. Of course he added his own ideas to the drumming along with the rest of us. Having said that, I want to say how well it works out with Tim on the drums. He is an exellent drummer and did a great job on the album as well as live. He is a machine with a lot of force and he fit the bill great. Very happy with him in the band. Personally I have been a big fan of is drumming even long time before he joined the band. I knew his work from bands like Hate Eternal and Decrepit Birth amongst others. So I was pretty excited when I heard he was joining the band a while back ago.

– And, is this a pattern MORBID ANGEL is going to follow from now on?

Impossible to say at this point, really. In the world of Art you never know. We haven`t decided already what the next album will be like. It will definitely be a Morbid Angel album, that is for sure. But we have not started composing any new material yet. But I am sure it will be interesting!

– In «Too Extrem!» we can find some words in Spanish, how did you come up with this idea?

Well, that is not an answer I can give you, unfortunately. That is an idea of David, so that would be for him to answer.

– I guess, after a change like this, you don’t care that much about critics but, do you think most metalheads tend to be narrow-minded toward this kind of musical evolutions?

Of course there are some narrow minded people out there ,but this is all more a matter of taste. Either you like it or not. People usually know what they want and what they like after all. So if they want to hate on it, be my guest and hate on it. We cant change that anyway and why would we? As said, either you love it or you hate it. I think this album definitely will be one of those examples. And that is a good thing though, because that means a lot of people are talking about it. It has absolutely gotten a lot of attention.

– And, after listening to the mix of sounds in the album; what are the main musical inspirations behind «Illud Divinum Insanus»?

Can only speak for my part here, but I am very focused on the extreme, violent and strict musical expression. I wanted to create something fast ,dark and powerful . I have always loved the sick and the brutal vibe within music.

– You have already played some shows. How may tracks off the album are you currently playing?

So far we have brought in Nevermore,Vulgore and I am Morbid to the setlist. Nevermore we already played for a while. We`ll see what other songs might get added to the set in the future. There are a few other metal songs from the new album I would like to play live, for sure.

– That has been all, thanks once more for taking your time. If you want to add some final words; last lines are yours.

Thank you very much for the interview. We will see you all on tour! Come by for a bloody musical massacre!
