1- Hello, thanks for answering to our questions. What are you guys currently up to?
Hey, thank you for asking the questions! You’re talking to John Ferguson, Lead Vocals for Torrefy from Victoria BC. The other members are currently in the jam space practicing material from the latest album and working on tracks for the next one! I’m listening to some Speed-metal and looking forward to this interview

2- First off, could you make some history of the band?
Absolutely! The four instrumental members of Torrefy (Adam, Ben, Simon and Dan) all used to jam regularly, until their music began to become more 12615148_976613265765615_8164754399680271830_oorganized and concise, leading them to write songs rather than just impromptu musical odysseys. After they played a couple shows as an instrumental heavy metal act, I got to see them and went back to their jamspace to hear them some more and have some drinks. This lead to me showing interest in trying out and them encouraging me to do so. We played our first show as a complete band on the New Years Eve of 2012, and have played countless since. Working our way up from basements and garages to festivals and theaters has been a fucking awesome journey!

3- How could you describe your sound?
We take a very eclectic approach to the Thrash genre, so much so that “Thrash” is not a completely accurate description of us. With extreme and blackened vocals over our frantic but coherent (dare I say melodic?) style of metal it has become very difficult to pinpoint an exact genre we fit in. Many critics have referred to us as “Progressive Thrash”

4- What are the band’s main musical influences?
We have many! Though we have whittled it down to a smaller list, including but not limited to Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Skeletonwitch, Vektor and Immortal I would also list DRI as a personal influence

5- How has the feedback for your new album been?
Very positive. The Infinity Complex has been described as a vast improvement over our already well received debut album and songs such as Thrashist Dictator, The Singularity and Blinding the Beholder seem to really strike a chord with fans of speed-metal and blackened-thrash. Each review that comes in always seems to imply the writer is surprised and impressed by our approach, and some have gone so far as to say they have never heard anything like it (in a positive way, I’m sure…) I’d love to hear more feedback though! Whether through a youtube comment or directly contacting the band in E-mail or on facebook, let us know what you think of our creation!

6- And are you personally satisfied with the final outcome?
I am very satisfied! We put a lot of effort into making this a very honest album. Our intent was to recreate Torrefy’s live sound and I believe we accomplished that with earnest!  It was a lot of fun making a concept album and thinking about everything from the sounclips in certain songs to how we wanted each song to flow in to the next. The order of tracks really contributes to the feeling of increased intensity as the story progresses and I really feel we did a damn good job with every aspect of the concept, especially art, lyrics and musical themes

7- How could you describe this opus in just 3 words?
The Infinity Complex! but seriously, how about “Eulogy For Existence”

8- How was the production process for your new release?
It was a blast. We worked closely with Gustavo, a producer who is as talented as he is easy to get along with. Though we had limited time for some of the tracking everyone really pulled together and got some amazing takes. I lived off Crown Royal and Mr. Noodles for my days recording and seem to recall puppets coming in to play at some point, but that could just be studio-delirium

9- And how does the songwriting process work?
Our 2 guitarists and bassist do the writing instrumentally, usually they bring in the “skeleton” of a song, basically just the riffs in the order they decided they will go for this track. After everyone has become comfortable with these riffs we begin working on the smaller details such as transitions, solo placement, stops and rotation counts. Over the course of this process both the drums and I establish our contributions to the music until everyone in the band feels it is played well enough to unveil at a show. Often I have multiple concepts for lyrics on songs, and depending on the “feel” or “vibe” of the new songs composition I apply whichever concept suits the tracks theme.

10 – Finally, what are you near-future plans?
13087495_1053066411453633_8563381512573594112_nPromoting and showing off our new album The Infinity Complex! On top of that we would like to do some touring in Canada, hopefully making our way to a couple festivals such as Armstrong Metal Fest, Farmaggedon and Shredmonton along the way. We have a majority of writing on the third album finished, so a bit further in the future, but sooner than you may think, we will be hitting the studio again!

11- That’s all from our side, thanks again for taking your time to answer our questions. If you now want to add some final words; feel free to do it.
Keep representing metal wherever you are! If you want to get a hold of us, not only will we respond asap, but we fucking love hearing from fan and friend alike
