GNAW THEIR TONGUES (Eng.)
– Hi, thanks for your time. What are you currently up to? How is everything doing right now with GNAW THEIR TONGUES?
At the moment nothing. I’ve released so much these past 6 six years, it’s time for a break!
– This project is realitvely young but you have been quite active since its inception. Anyway I guess there may be some people who aren’t familiar with you yet so, first off, could you please share some history of GNAW THEIR TONGUES? What prompted you forming this project?
I have been making music since my early teenage years. I’ve been in countless project/bands. I started recording material as soon as i got a computer which allowed me to record music. I had lots of material and in 2005/2006 i decided to throw some material on the internet for free download. It took of from there. With GTT i had the idea not to be bound by anything anymore. Complete freedom. To do only what i wanted to do. Also to express my general disgust for lots of different things.
– And what’s the origin behind the band’s name?
It’s from the bible verse Revelation 16:10: «Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain
10Â Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain.»
– GNAW THEIR TONGUES has always been your personal project but, have you ever considered the idea of doing of it a full/complete band?
Yes sure. Only it’s impossible. Too much people would be involved. Too much money. i hate most people and i have no money..so that’s not an option.
– You have recently released «Eschatological Scatology», a previously unreleased album recorded in 2008/2009. Why has not seen the light of day until now?
There was talk about releasing it back than on a small label. The owner had some personal problems, so it got delayed. After some time i already had different plans/releases..so it got shelved. I still like it after hearing it a couple years later, so i put it on bandcamp.
– Still keeping the noise element, this «Eschatological Scatology» has a more Metal approach. Were your influences different back when the album was recorded?
Not really. I always liked and did black metal (see De Magia Veterum). But most of these songs are fast songs, recorded for different albums, on which they didn’t fit. So i threw them all together (you might hear a slight difference between the production of different songs).
– In general it has a strong Black Metal touch, with blastbeasts, with tremolo guitars and it also has BM sounding vocals. Was this the sound you wanted to get with this album or did you let things flow naturally?
see previous question. They where not recorded for this album, but in the end they all worked well as a album. Because i think this album is still great.
– Your music is not easy to digest at all, and we can also see a complex songwriting so, how do ideas flow to write each song?
I really don’t know. I might have abstract ideas of what i want. They always come out different. I try to write but my subconscious. I also always try to do something different.
– Throughout all your releases you’ve managed to create a really personal sound, taking inspirations from different music styles so, does your music have any limit?
I would like to think no, but in the end, there are always limits. That’s why i have different projects. I can’t see me doing a ’80 power ballad with GTT :). But with GTT i have pure electronic sounds to pure black metal sounds to pure noise sounds and everything inbetween, so it’s definitely a wide sound.
– And what have been some of the most influential bands for you?
Oh lots, but i like to think i will not let other people influnce my music. Some bands that where a inspiration: venom, bathory, necromantia, dark throne, leviathan, masters hammer etc.
– Anyway, for all those who haven’t heard this opus yet; how could you describe it in just 3 words?
Grotesque Bestial Horror.
– You have self-released «Eschatological Scatology»; has this given you more freedom, more work or a bit of both?
I was somewhat tired of waiting on labels, waiting on cd’s, sitting on large stocks of cd’s. Most people are bastards and download music anyway. i just threw it on the net. A vinyl version would be rather nice i think.
– I guess GNAW THEIR TONGUES is the best way for you to channel your inner self, or maybe the only way. What does this project provide you and allows you to do?
I provides me a perfect way to channel the most negative things and vomit them into the world. I’m old enough to see that everything has multiple sides. I channel beauty and the more positive things through SEIROM. It keeps things in balance.
– On some of your albums we can find French as basis on your lyrics, while in some others the main language is English but, which language do you think fits better your music and why?
I also had german, netherlands and sranan tongo on some release. Again i try not to be bound by anything including languages. I think english is probably the best for this project because thats what the most people understand.
– And finally, what are your near-future plans?
i’ve got a bunch of releases coming out: SEIROM, DE MAGIA VETERUM and ADERLATING.
