– Hello, thanks for answering to our questions. What are you currently up to?
No problem, greatful for the support. Doing some promotion work for the new album «Mortui Vivos Docent». Other than that, working on some new material.
– First off, could you make some history of the your past and this solo project?
My past as a musician comes from bands like Maze of Torment, Deceiver and Thrown. I usually say that this solo project started around 2001, also then just under the moniker FLESH. I have released 3 albums, «Dödsångest», «Temple of Whores», «Worship the Soul of Disgust», under that name. When I decided to quit all bands and only focus and create music for my solo project I also did the name more personal, THE PETE FLESH DEATHTRIP. But to me it´s the same thing and I sometimes even use the old FLESH, like in the inner-sleeve of the new album.
– How could you describe your sound?
It´s hard for myself to put an label on it, but in alot of the reviews they have used the term Blackened Death Metal. I guess it´s ok even if there is more to it, in my ears.
– What are the band’s main musical influences?
I could mention hundred of bands here that I have grown up with and in some forms have shaped my way of doing music. It´s everything from POSSESSED to PINK FLOYD, JUDAS PRIEST to BATHORY.
– How is the feedback for your new album being?
In an overall view it has been good, more and more seem to understand the general idea of different contrasts and atmospheres through the album. I get more than greatful when I notice that people actually are listen to the album and not just play 5 seconds of every song and then writes an opinion. Of course I understand that not everyone will like it, but you get my point.
– And are your personally satisfied with the final outcome?
Yes, I´am. Lots of ideas that I not have tried before that came out just as I wanted. Details are there, that in my opinion, makes it an album that has something different over it, an vibe that marks this album. It´s impossible to be totally unique in an writing process, but I try to get in small details that marks my way of writing songs.
– How could you describe this opus in just 3 words?
Variation, atmospheric, dark.
– How has the production process for your new release been?
It has been long, really long, because of all kind of different reasons. But I see it like this, it was needed. I had released 1 or 2 albums a year with different bands and projects for an long time, I needed this time to start from scratsch and get a new start. I changed studio from The Abyss studio to studio Beast with Peter Bjärgö (CRYPT OF KERBEROS, TYRANT, ARCANA etc.) as the producer, it was brilliant to work with him, and the time was needed.
– And how do you use to work on the songwriting?
That differs a lot. Some songs have a really long history with riffs I have been playing for a while, but haven’t found the right place for them. Sometimes you have a
song done in two days. Most of the time, it’s the riff that comes to me first, but now and then a lyric line just comes up and I grab the guitar to write around that. I try to work more like that to get a better sense of balance and find new ways to arrange the songs. I´m the only one writing and arranging the material in T.P.F.D.T., so I have to experiment with different ways to develop the songs in order to keep things interesting for myself. On this album Micke Broberg (Unanimated) sings on half of the album as a guest singer, he also wrote some lyrics. I also changed guest drummer to Andreas Jonsson (VINTERLAND, TYRANT). So, those facts also changed a bit in some of the ways in the writing process. When it comes to the lyrics, mostly stuff that relates to the dead and death in general. We all can relate to it and have different expreciances from it, I try to make it from my experiences, reflections and journeys to find different views on it. It has attracts me since I was a kid, it comes natural for me. There are tons of topics that you can relate to this factor and write about. Of course, sometimes there are lyrics written that has nothing to do with it, but not often. I at least must find it interesting.
– Finally, what are you near-future plans?
Keep promoting the album. Writing new material, keeping myself in an developing path.
