– Hello, thanks for your time. What are you currently up to?

Hey there, these days we are rehearsing with Mayhem for the Wacken show this weekend. And we have a new drummer in Nidingr we are breaking in.

First off and as NUNFUCKRITUAL is a new band, I hope you don’t mind starting with some history of the band….

Not much to say, I made some songs, and needed a someone to sing on it. I got Espen to try it out and he was perfect. We struggled sometime to get a drummer that would fit this, tried a couple and landed on Andreas. I met Danny on the road a couple of times and I thought his style of playing would be perfect. He said yes to it even before listening to it, and he was very pleased when he actually liked the songs I sent him haha

– And what are the main influences behind your music? And I don’t only mean musical influences.

I have no idea what was going on in my head at the time, I just was in one of those moods, think I made the songs in a week. And Espen followed up shortly with one song as well.

NUNFUCKRITUAL was formed in 2006 but you have now released your debut album. What were you up to during that time? As I read you already had some riffs here and there back then…

As I said I basicly had the album pre-prod ready in 2006. But it was hard to find the right people and even harder to get people to work on it. People are busy with other things, including me.

– In fact «In Bondage to the Serpent» was already recorded in 2009 (if I’m not mistaken). Why did it take you that time? Beside your work with other bands.

Yeah, we had everything ready but no one to release it. It was a pain in the ass to get a deal. I made the mistake of going after all the biggest labels instead of trying out some of the smaller ones. So when the time came to get it mixed and mastered we didnt have any money. Luckely I did another round hunting for labels, but this time I hit the smaller ones, this time I think I got maybe 5 labels that wanted to release it.

– I guess you take things easy and this, next to the fact you can be considered an «all-star» band makes me wonder if this is a stable band or, because of the work with your other bands, this can’t be nothing but a paralel project?

I treat all my projects the same way, dont want any of them to be like just release 1 album and forget about it. As soon as the NunFuckRitual album as been out for a while, I will start making another one, we will even do live shows if we can make it fit. At least its something we wanna do live, I think this material is going to be insane live.

The only intention I had behind it when I sat down writing the album, was that I wanted to make some slow shit. All my other bands have the blast beat thing going on all the time (almost). First I thougt of it as something doomy. But now I dont know. Not the biggest fan of putting things in terms, it is what it is in a way. People can call it whatever they want, I call it NunFuckRitual. Not important to be put in any genre.

– What do you aim to express with your music? As it reflects a really dark and and anguished mood…

I wanted to make some slow ass music and I think we did that, the whole atmosphere thing just happened.

– I think atmospheres help quite a lot with this, and I also believe they’re an important part of the band; is this true? What do you try to get with those ambients?

It just happened.

– Beside the music, could you please shed some light on some of the lyrical themes?

All about them is about the fucking of the nuns, hehe kidding. Attila’s lyrics is about when someone keep you prison in a room for 20 years, like your dauthger or something. And the joy you feel when the guardian is opennig the door. haha pure love

Guess the other songs is love songs as well, the love for God. Nuns..they are some dedicated bithces I must say, they take vows committing their lifes to someone/somewhat that doesnt even excist, well not in my world. I cant even stay committed to something for more that a couple of hours.

– Artwork was crafted by artist Christian Sloan Hall. What could you tell us about it? Why did you choose him, how did you work on it, etc.

Christian is a close friend of mine, he knew about this album for many years and wanted to do the cover from the first time I told him about the album. Perfect.

I was supposed to mix and master it myself, since we didnt have any money for it. But Void at Debumur wanted to release it, and he gave us the money we needed to get it done pro. I chose Tom because I have worked with him before and I know what I get from him, plus he is very professional and easy to work with.

Since this was a zero budget project I had to record alot of it myself with my own equipment. I recorded the guitars and drums in the Nidingr Studio in my hometown Horten, 1 hour from Oslo.Andreas put his drumkit in his little Volvo and drove 8 hours from Sweden to the Nidingr Studio in Norway. Espen recorded his vocals in his studio in Oslo. And Dan did his bass at a friends studio in USA.

– Yourself took production duties. How positive is for NUNFUCKRITUAL having a band member doing the production?

Well, since I am the primus motor behind this project I dont see any negative aspects with being the producer. Its not like I enjoy doing everything in a band all the time, but someone has to do it yah know. That is what you get from working with retards all the time.

– In this CD we can find guest artists as Attila Csihar and Ravn, so I would like to know how did the idea arise, why did you choose them, what have they brought with their cooperation…

Not sure, I just happen to know some people in the scene that are talented. And sometimes when I make shit I instantly get and idea in my head on who would be cool to use on what. The song Attila did turned out completely different after he did it, I was picturing him doing his usuall type of singing, instead he did something he never had done before, suddenly that song turned out as a ballad or something, wierd. But Im very pleased with the result.

– You guys are hailing from different places; how did you get together to rehearse, compose, etc.?

This was not rehearsed at all, the only time some of us has been in the same room during this process, was when I recorded the drums with Andreas.

– We could say you are an “all-star band”. This terms tends to be a double-edged sword. Do you think this works more as a benefit for the band or the opposite?

Call it whatever you wanna call it. Norway is a small country, and there isnt that many people who do the music that we do. So everyone knows
everyone in the so called scene basicly. You know, people start hanging out, drinking and what have you not, then theres always talk about doing some things togheter, why the hell not. If I only did Nidingr, I would fucking die. I need something to fill up my time with, and I guess other musicians have it the same way.

– And finally, what are your near-future plans? Is a tour viable for NUNFUCKRITUAL?

First up is starting on the next album, I already have some ideas. Not so sure about touring due to our lack of time to do shit. But we wanna do gigs, maybe one-offs, if the location is right. We dont wanna play a shitty club with no atmosphere, it has to be something special.

– That’s all, thank you once more for your time. If you want to add some final words; last lines are yours.

Go fuck a nun
