– Hi Steve. First off thanks for your time. To start, are you happy the way «To Hell with God» turned out?
ANSWER; WE IM PRETTY HAPPY WITH IT. AT FIRST I WASNT. WHEN I DEMOE’D THE MATERIAL IT WAS ALOT DIFFERENT THAN IT IS NOW. IT WAS LONGER, A BIT MORE TOO IT. A BIT MORE BLASTING. BUT WE EDITED IT DOWN AND AFTER LISTENING TO IT FOR A WHILE I DO LIKE IT AND THINK IT’S BETTER THE WAY IT IS NOW.
– If I’m not wrong, you were through some hard times during the «Till Death do us Part» time, how do you now look back at that period?
ANSWER; YEAH IT WAS A BUMMER TIME. WE HAD STOPPED TOURING FOR A WHILE SO IT REALLY SUCKED. NO GOOD MEMORIES OF THAT TIME.
– Your new «To Hell with God» sounds quite heavy, does it reflect, in any way, your mood and state of the «Till Death do us Part» period? I mean, did you already work on it during that time maybe?
ANSWER; NO, THE MATERIAL FOR THWG WAS KIND OF A FRESH START. WE’D STARTING DOING GIGS AGAIN AND THE PRESSURE WAS OFF A BIT. IT STILL TOOK SOME TIME TO GET THE SONGS AND THE PRODUCTION FULLY ROLLING BUT THAT’S HOW IT GOES SOMETIMES.
– I think your brand new record follows a similar pattern to «Till Death do us Part» but perfectioned, but how do you perceive it?
ANSWER; YEAH I SUPPOSE IT FOLLOWS A SIMILAR FORMULA. BUT THAT HAPPENS SOMETIMES. IM KIND OF GLAD THOUGH BECAUSE I THOUGHT THERE WAS SOME GOOD IDEAS THAT WENT OVERLOOKED ON TDDUP SO TO KIND OF REVAMP THEM AND GIVE THEM A SECOND CHANCE WAS COOL. MAYBE DO IT A LITTLE BETTER,YOU KNOW.
– As far as I know, you produced some of the latest DEICIDE’s album, but this time you have worked with a producer. Why you didn’t do it and what do you think has this affect in a positive way to the final result?
ANSWER; I HAD PRODUCED THOSE WORKS JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE HAD TO AND WAS THE ONLY ONE THERE. YOU GET FORCED INTO A SITUATION YOU GOTTA DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO. SO HAVING A PRODUCER THIS TIME WAS COOL FOR ME, IT LET ME FOCUS ON JUST THE CREATIVE PART OF THE RECORD AND NOT WORRY ABOUT THE MORE TECHNICAL ASPECTS. LET SOMEONE ELSE WORRY ABOUT THAT STUFF.
– The producer you chose was Mark Lewis, did he get the sound you were looking for? And why him?
ANSWER; YEAH HE GOT AS PRETTY HEAVY SOUND, BUT WE KNEW HE WOULD. THEY’RE GOOD AT GETTING THAT MODERN METAL SOUND OUT THAT AT AUDIOHAMMER. GOOD GUYS OUT THERE.
– If I remember correctly, he also worked with ORDER OF ENNEAD. Did this have something to do with your choice?
ANSWER;YEAH IT DID. ID GOTTEN TO KNOW THE GUYS OUT THERE TRHU THE OOE PROJECTS. WE HAD DONE THOSE RECORDS WITH REALLY SMALL BUDGETS SO I KNEW WITH MORE MONEY AND TIME WE’D GET A GIGANTIC PUMMELING SOUND. AND I THINK WE DID.
– And by the way, will be a 3rd OOE’s album?
ANSWER; IM NOT SURE, WE HOPE SO. WE HADN’T HEARD ANYTHING FROM THE LABEL IN A WHILE. NOT SURE IF WE’RE STILL SIGNED. BT IOF WE’RE NOT WE MAY PUT OUT SOMETING INDEPENDENTLY IF WE GET BORED ENOUGH, WHICH WE JUST MIGHT.
– Going back to DEICIDE and your new album, I noticed the productions sounds pretty heavy an modern, just as the general sound, which it also has some old school vibe. How easy is for you «going» back to the past but still evolving? As, as I told you, I consider «To Hell with God» as a great progression respect your previous album.
ANSWER; THANK YOU. WELL WE TRIED TO RECAPTURE SOME OLD VIBE AND ENERGY BUT IT’S KIND OF HARD NOT TO SOUND LIKE YOUR MODERN PROGRESSED SELVES. I THINK WE ENDED UP WITH A DECENT BALANCE OF NEW STUFF WITH OUR OLD FEEL. IT’S US, JUST A NEW US. NEW BUT UNMISTAKABLE.
– This new album sounds new and fresh but with the DEICIDE’s recognizable sound, just as the compositions so, how was the composition process like?
ANSWER; OUR WRITING PROCESS IS THE SAME FOR MANY YEARS NOW. ILL DEMO SOME STUFF AND HAND IT TO THE GUYS, THEY’LL GIVE ME SOME FEEDBACK ON IT AND WE’LL GO FROM THERE. GET INTO THE STUDIO AND HASH IT OUT SOME MORE AND EVENTUALLY WE GET TO A POINT WHERE WE’RE ALL HAPPY WITH IT.
– Ralph Santolla is not an «official» band member. Have you thought of having a steady guitar player? And, as he’s not an steady member, how important is he for DEICIDE?
ANSWER; WELL HE’S IMPORTANT FOR OUR NEW SOUND, HIS LEADS ARE INCREDIBLE. HE MAY OR MAY NOT BE OFIICIAL AS IT WERE BUT WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, WE NEE A GUITARIST. SO WE’LL USE HIS SERVICES WHENEVER HE;S AVAILABLE.
– You have worked with several labels during all these years, the latest change was moving from Earache to Century Media. Why did you decide to do so and why did you choose Century Media?
ANSWER;WELL WE’D FINISHED OUR DEAL WITH EARACHE AND IT JUST WAS TIME TO MOVE ON. IT’S LIKE THAT SOMETIMES WHEN YOU’VE BEEN SOMEWHERE TOO LONG, A HOUSE OR RELATIONSHIP OR A RECORD DEAL. WHEN IT’S OVER IT’S OVER, TIME TO MOVE ALONG.
– I’ve just realized this is your 10th album. Do you see the band releasing some other 10 albums?
ANSWER; HEHE I DON’T KNOW, WE’LL HAVE TO SEE ABOUT THAT. NOT SURE WE’LL BE ALIVE FOR 10 MORE RECORDS. BUT WE’RE GOOD FOR A FEW MORE I’M SURE. WE’LL SEE HOW WELL WE CAN HOLD UP. I ALWAYS SAY THE METAL KEEPS ME YOUNG.
– I saw you’ll be touring Europe next Juny/July, is the tour «closed» or can be more dates be announced? Have you got any offers to play in Spain?
ANSWER; YEAH I THINK AT THIS POINT THE DATES ARE ALL LOCKED IN. ID REALLY LIKE TO MAKE IT BACK TO SPAIN. WE AL;WAYS HAVE A GREAT TIME THERE, GREAT GIGS, GREAT FANS, GREAT CHICKS. ALWAYS A GOOD TIME.
– And finally, and beside touring, what can we expect from DEICIDE in a near-future?
ANSWER; HOPEFULLY MORE DATES THIS YEAR AND SOME NEXT YEAR, AND I GUESS WE’LL START THINKING ABOUT DOING ANOTHER RECORD SOON. AND JUST SEE WHATEVER OPPORTUNITIES COME ALONG.
