– Hello, thanks for answering to our questions. What’s STAM1NA currently up to?
The band is kicking some ass around Finland by touring. Then it’s off to festivals, this summer there are lots and lots of them for us to visit. So a little brake just before summer time is great to have.
– First of all, as I guess some people in Spain won’t know about you yet; could you please share some history of the band?
Me and Pekka and Teppo founded the band in 1996, so we’re 16 years old as a group. We always have wanted to do technical stuff with heavy guitar riffs. Compare us to Sepultura, Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad and there you have it!
– And why did you pick “Stam1na” as the band’s name?
We admired Slayer, Sepultura and this Finn band Stone. So Stamina was a good way to follow them up. We started off as a English singing band. Now, as Finnish singing, the name stands for this idea of Finnish Stamina, witch goes hand in hand with our sauna, viina and perkele.
– You have just released your new “Nocebo”; how’s its feedback going so far? Are you satisfied with it?
More than satisfied. We have got some mind blowing feedback, both from media and fans. There are great number of new people listening to the band now.
– And what could you say are the main differences between “Viimeinen Atlantis” and this new “Nocebo”?
Nocebo does not include story-like structure within, it is more of an traditional track-by-track metal album, so to speak. Also the production was much more expensive, hehehe.
– On my eyes this new effort is your most mature and complete album so far. Could you say this is your best piece to date?
Probably yes. I cannot verify this yet, it takes time to see how well an album lives through the times. But these new songs are most fun to play live, of course.
– I also think is almost perfect in technique, with a great performance improvement that is almost perfect as well but, how do you think has your evolution been since your previous album?
We trained this album song material very very very well together as a group of brothers. We had this five-day rehersal camp thing during July 2011. This really tied us and the song together. Sauna, rehersals, sauna… it fittend our plans well. So this way were absolutly much better prepared to go to the expenssive studio facilities.
– You are a band with a really personal sound; you mix Thrash with progressive Metal without loosing an aggressive edge so, what are the band’s main musical influences?
Master Of Puppets is one of the most influencal albums todate. But honestly it needs to be said out loud, that Soilwork was one of the most biggest bands for us in the beginnig of 2000.
– And how was the songwriting process this time around? Did anything change on it?
Kai-Pekka wrote two songs. That is double the amount than last time!
– All this being said, how could you describe “Nocebo” in just 3 words?
Fucking sick shit!
– This new CD was recorded with producer Joe Barressi (TOOL, APOCALYPTICA, etc.). Are you satisfied with his work?
Totally, 200%. He has been in contact with us still, letting us know that he still laughs out when recalling our special musical experiences in Hollola.
– And what could you comment on the record’s artwork (who crafted it, the concept, etc.)?
As usual we as a band and me as the writer of the lyrics had totally free hands with coming up with the whole consept. This way the music will look like what we intended it to look like. Cool!
– If I’m not mistaken during the early years of the band your lyrics were in English; have you ever thought about singing again in English?
There are Nomad song on the new album sang in English.
– Talking about this; what do lyrics on “Nocebo” deal with?
It all comes down on the idea of faking, honesty and mortality.
– You are a totally acclaimed band in Finland, but you aren’t so known outside Finland frontiers; what do you think is the main reason behind this?
We have not put effort on touring outside Finland. Now this thing is our main jobs as persons. If and when we kick off to jam abroad, it’ll be long and hard work to start all over again. And I CAN*T WAIT!
– And finally, what are your near-future plans?
To get drunk in my local bar Apina.
